Mnemonic devices are a great way to easily remember large chunks of information. Help your child flourish by improving their memory using some of The Tutoring Center in Oviedo’s recommended techniques.
Acronyms are words made by combining the first letters of the words in a sentence or phrase. A great example is an acronym you can use to remember the names of the Great Lakes: HOMES (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie and Superior). Another is a useful way to remember that atoms are built of protons, electrons and neutrons; just remember PEN.
Acrostics are a fantastic way for your child to remember lists of names. Construct a sentence in which the first letter of each word is the same as the first letter of the word you need to remember. One example is a trick for remembering the order of the planets (Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune); just remember ‘My Very Excellent Mother Just Served Up Nachos’!
Rhyming phrases can really help information to stick in your child’s mind. Take, for example, the well-known ‘In 1492, Columbus sailed the ocean blue’. If you’re struggling with your Spanish, remember ‘If it’s how you feel or where you are, always use the verb estar’! Try to think of rhyming phrases to help your child remember important information.
Many children struggle to differentiate between the spelling of ‘desert’ and ‘dessert’. Try this mnemonic association to help remember the difference. When you have dessert, you always want seconds, so ‘dessert’ has a second ‘s’! Association doesn’t have to be as obvious - simply focusing hard on something interesting or funny whilst also thinking of something you need to remember can help it stick in your mind.
Even with these techniques in hand, your child may not be able to remember everything! To arrange a free diagnostic assessment that will identify any academic areas in which your child may need more special attention, contact The Tutoring Center in Oviedo.
